For decades, long before “fake news” became a common expression a few years ago, the United States and other democracies have been attacked from other countries using Disinformation (DI) Campaigns. Through research and investigation, I have learned about dozens of efforts to influence and undermine the democratic process not just in the United States, but in democracies across the globe.
I am assembling details of these activities for a monograph which will be offered to professional associations in the fields of journalism and political science in early calendar year 2020, titled “Disinformation: Destroying Democracies.” It’s my hope and prayer that, by becoming more knowledgeable about these efforts, civic-minded leaders around the globe will take more active steps to defend their democratic institutions and most cherished rights such as freedom of the press, free and fair elections, etc., against DI campaign activities.
If you are affiliated with a college or university, I am especially interested in traveling to your institution in early 2020 to help “sound the alarm” about DI campaigns. My contact information is below and, if you believe that this is an important subject, hope you will invite me to visit and speak with faculty, students and community on the topic in 2020.
Here’s a preview of how such a talk will go:
More posts will follow in the weeks and months ahead on this site, so please bookmark http://disnformationcampaigns.wordpress.com and come back for more information from time to time. I’d like to express gratitude to my colleague Peter Jennings at Cuyahoga Community College, who’s been a terrific at obtaining professional articles on this subject. Thanks also to Frida Etchell at Tri-C, whose artwork you see on this blog and in my presentations.
Also, many thanks to the Mandel Scholars Academy at Cuyahoga Community College for selecting me as one of its inaugural Mandel Faculty Fellow Scholars. I hope that the research and the communication stemming from my work is worthy of the honor.
